Common Houseplants
There is a boom of houseplants now-a-days. More and more number of people are interested to bring plants to their homes. It is an easy hobby which is attracting people of all ages.
Houseplants are an easy way to bring greenery to your indoors. Many of the houseplants are easy to care. There is a wide variety of them in market and you can choose according to your needs. If you are a beginner and do not know how to go about it you can start just with two plants. Once you have discovered which one of them thrives in your home, you can move on to choose more of different types. If a particular type of plants interests you, like succulents in my case, you can decide to get more of these and specialize in their care and propagation.
There are numerous plants to go about but here since I started with succulents and cactus as an amateur gardener, I will discuss about them at first. And yes, I wont discuss about our humble jade or Aloe Vera here which is a common house plant and everyone knows about it. In case if you don't ping me, I can send you some cuttings! duh duh
Succulents are beautiful plants and they store water in their leaves. This is the reason they do not require too much watering like regular plants.
So what do they need ?
A well draining soil which comprises of coarse sand / grit along with some soil.
Plenty of light throughout the year, make sure you let them soak that early morning sunlight.
And humidity, not that necessary!
Watering ? fertilizer ? During winters, it is their resting period. Do not fertilize them. Check the soil, water every four to five days. The growing period starts after winters so this is the time you can feed them with liquid fertilizer.
The succulents which I have tried growing here in my balcony garden are Howarthia, String of pearls and Kalanchoe to name a few. An interesting thing about String of Pearls which I have recently found out is that they grow really nicely during winters. So if you are thinking of buying succulents for your house you can start with the few mentioned here.
